Cooling systems at Plastima

In plastics processing, cooling water is not a side issue: it determines cycle time, dimensional stability and ultimately your cost per part. At the same time the cooling system is often the largest consumer of electricity in the hall. That is exactly where the gain lies — not in a cheaper machine, but in a system that costs less over fifteen years.

For this Plastima supplies the system technology of ONI-Wärmetrafo: cooling systems designed to measure after a thorough survey of your installation, with attention to the energy efficiency of every component and flow-optimised pipework. Air coolers, cooling towers and chillers are combined into one coherent system, controlled by a process-optimising control unit.

Partly closed cooling system with free cooling

Free coolers combined with an ONI cooling system

The standard solution for plastics processing: a closed cooling circuit combined with glycol-free free coolers. As soon as the outside temperature allows, free cooling takes over from the chiller — during the winter months that can save up to 80% of the cooling energy costs. The circuit stays closed, so the cooling water does not become contaminated and there is no legionella risk.

Technical features:

  • Glycol-free free coolers, integrated with the chiller
  • Up to 80% saving on cooling energy costs during the winter
  • Components (pumps, chillers) selected for energy efficiency
  • Flow-optimised pipework for low pump power
  • Process-optimising control that matches all components to one another
  • Capacity range from 5 kW to 150,000 kW per cooling unit

Modular container cooling systems

Interior view of a modular ONI plant room in a container

Demand for modular energy centres has grown strongly in recent years, for three reasons: they are quickly available, they are flexible, and they take up no valuable production floor. Cooling, cooling water, heat energy and compressed air supply sit compactly together in modular units, including pumps, buffer vessels and control units. Expanding means adding a module rather than opening up the hall.

Technical features:

  • Complete energy centre in modular, relocatable units
  • Fast delivery and commissioning; no structural alterations
  • Cooling, cooling water, heat and compressed air in one set-up
  • Modular, expands as production grows
  • Frees up production floor space

Open cooling systems and rental cooling

Water-cooled compact chiller in an ONI container cooling system

We supply open cooling systems such as cooling towers on request, but we do not recommend them as a first choice: they require repeated legionella testing, use a lot of water and give poorer water quality in the circuit. In many cases a partly closed system with free cooling is both cheaper to run and simpler to manage.

For temporary capacity — during a peak, a rebuild or a breakdown — an extensive rental fleet is available, covering up to 2,000 kW of cooling capacity in a single system.
